POhWER’s services are free, independent and confidential. Advocacy can support people to

  • understand their situation and rights
  • communicate with staff and services;
  • explore their options and choices;
  • prepare for meetings
  • express their views and needs at mental health meetings and appointments; and
  • Access relevant mental health support and services.

Independent Mental Health Advocacy (IMHA)

People who have been detained under most sections of the Mental Health Act have a legal right to receive information and support from an Independent Mental Health Advocate. This service is also for people subject to Guardianship or a Community Treatment Order and people who are sectioned under the Mental Health Act and are considering or being considered for certain treatments.

Community Mental Health Advocacy

This is a service for anyone in East Sussex who need support with their mental health care and treatment issues, Adult Social Care issues, and safeguarding issues. This service can help people to understand and access mental health support services in the community.
