About supported accommodation

Supported accommodation is a service that aims to enable adults to live more independently in the community. The Supported Accommodation Team (SAT) supports providers who have houses, flats, or self-contained bedsits to provide accommodation and assists tenants referred by Adult Social Care services.

 

Referrals

Clients are referred by the The Specialist Services Team (Brokerage). Clients are required to have a social care need and will have agreed funding for a period of time from the three main care management teams. These are the Community Mental Health Teams, the Community Learning Disability Teams and the Neighbourhood Support Teams.

 

Supporting providers and clients

Although supported accommodation is an unregulated service, we ensure quality accommodation and support by monitoring and supporting providers. This is achieved by offering each provider their own Supported Accommodation Officer (SAO). The SAO will meet with providers regularly, offer training and support, review their service annually, and will enable providers to achieve the best outcomes for clients.

When a client is matched with a provider, the SAT is committed to designing a support plan with the client and provider to ensure that the support meets the client’s needs and wishes. The ultimate aim is to support clients to achieve the best possible level of independence and recovery, and work alongside the Care Management Teams to achieve this.

 

Types of accommodation

Approved providers can support clients in the following types of accommodation:

  • An independent flat or self-contained bedsit: the client has their own tenancy and the provider or support staff visit regularly to provide support.
  • A shared house: the client has a tenancy or license agreement in their own room with their own key, and shares the communal areas with other clients.
  • The provider’s own home: clients have the privacy of their own room with the choice of sharing mealtimes and communal facilities with other people in the house.

The SAT works with care managers to match clients to the most appropriate provider and robust risk assessments are undertaken. These risk assessments are shared with, and signed off by, the care management teams before placements can go ahead. This is designed to protect the clients and providers.

Due to supported accommodation being an unregulated service, providers cannot assist with personal care or administering medication. However, support can be arranged to meet these needs in partnership with external agencies and arranged by the client’s care manager.
