Tips for choosing providers

When you want to employ a tradesperson or a service provider the most important thing to consider is your personal safety.

The tips included in this guide are to help you stay safe and get the right solution to meet your needs.

General Tips


  • The more you know about the trader the better. 
  • Remember: if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
  • Don’t be pressured into buying things you don’t want.
  • Beware of impulse buys – you may regret it later.
  • Take time to do your research then choose the best provider that meets the needs of the person requiring the care.
  • Shop around to check prices or after sales service deals.
  • Remember to check any additional costs such as delivery costs.
  • Be safe online 
  • Always check the small print before agreeing to a contract.
  • Know where the trader is based, you’ll need it if you want to complain.
  • Keep a record of all details of your transaction including times, names, dates and emails.
  • Pay safely. On the internet, look out for the closed padlock symbol - this shows that the site is secure.
  • Disclosure and Barring Service checks help prevent unsuitable people from working or volunteering with vulnerable groups. 
  • Get advice from someone you trust if you are not sure.
  • Scams are fraud and fraud is a crime - find out which organisations are East Sussex Against Scams Charter Partners. Charter partners have pledged to take a stand against scams to protect their customers, staff, volunteers, the general public, neighbours, friends and family from being targeted by criminals.


Tips for employing a Service Provider

Some general points to consider are:


  • Try to be specific and clear about what you want.
  • Ask family and friends to help you choose the best provider.
  • Try to get at least three references.
  • If you can, speak to previous customers.
  • Don’t just go with the cheapest option think about how well you can communicate with the provider and the quality of their work.
  • Be wary of providers who are only willing to give you a mobile number rather than a land line number.
  • Ask for a written quotation and a written contract 
  • Any changes to a contract should be agreed and put in writing before the work is done.
  • Only pay for work that has been done. 
  • If a service provider / trader asks for an advance towards materials – this shouldn’t exceed 30%.
  • Ask for a receipt for any payments made.

Services used by East Sussex County Council

If you want to use services which are also used by the Council, these are referred to as preferred / approved / lead / contracted and non-contracted services.

Contracted to provide home care the Council needs in particular areas of the county. The service will have been through a quality assurance process and meet the criteria set by the Council.


Non-contracted home care providers

Used by the Council when needed because the service meets quality criteria requested by the Council.
